Some people know that they are destined for politics and they have lofty ambitions from an early age. Other people start off in a career which they think is going to be lifelong such as a history teacher or a family dentist caring for young smiles, only to be lured away in the political world.
Politicians have received a hard time lately and with good reason. Many people in this country were genuinely shocked by the expenses scandal as they thought that the first priority of a politician was to the country – not to his or her pocket.
That is why a new breed of politicians is needed who will lead this country out of the mess we are in. The qualities needed to be a politician are many and can be quite contradictory. You need to be quite a ruthless and forceful character when it comes to the cut and thrust of politics, not scared of speaking out or making tough decisions. And yet you need to be understanding and patient with the constituents and have a real understanding of some of the hardships of this country.
You need to be a family man or woman as the people relate better to you that way and yet you also have to realise that you will spend long amounts of time away from your family.
